Do Navarra
Known in Spain primarily for its good dry rosé, Rrioja’s immediate neighbour has a long history of winemaking dating back to Roman times and beyond. with approximately 18,000 hectares under vines, it was until recently considered essentially a source of good value, young, unspectacular reds made from the Garnacha variety. Things are changing however...
Do Penedes
Denominated since 1960, this region consists of some 28,000 hectares. It lies to the west of Barcelona and produces mainly white wines given the prominence of the Cava industry. There are 10 permitted grape varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon. neither merlot nor chardonnay are fully authorized but, in keeping with the enterprising Catalan spirit, the region has always been open to innovation and experimentation.
Do Rioja
Spain’s best known wine - producing area, renowned for its smooth, oaky reds - produced on a variety of levels. it consists of some 48,000 hectares and was the first ever denominacion de origen, created in 1926. Now run by no fewer than 3 different autonomous governments.
Do Priorato
Named after the Carthusian monks who pioneered winemaking here in the 12th century, this tiny, beautiful mountainous region in Tarragona province is famed for its dense, unoaked, blackberry flavoured reds.
Do Ribera Del Duero
Since 1982, this austere region of some 13,000 hectares is high up in the heartland of old Castile and is the source of some of Spain’s most spectacular reds. This is in no small part due to the characteristics of the local tinto fino grape variety, - a variant of Tempranillo which, having adapted to the severe local conditions with its extremes of climate, produces dark, deeply fragrant and excellently structured wines of impressive austerity, style and longevity.
